The WWER FUEL 2017 International Conference is organized by the Institute for Nuclear Research and Nuclear Eenergy–Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (INRNE-BAS) in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and supported by the Russian Fuel Company "TVEL" and Kozloduy NPP Plc. The Conference is one of the largest expert forums for discussion and analysis of current and latest achievements in nuclear fuel management technologies.

The scope of WWER FUEL 2017 includes the following topics: nuclear fuel performance and operational experience, improvement of fuel design and operation, nuclear fuel modelling and experimental support, licensing and providing high indicators for quality and safety, experience from the operation of WWER nuclear fuel at nuclear power plants in different countries, etc.

The Conference will be attended by experts from international scientific organizations working in the field of nuclear energy development, representatives of nuclear power plants and nuclear fuel producing companies. Among the participants are professionals of Russia, Bulgaria, Austria, Germany, Norway, Poland, USA, Hungary, Finland, Czech Republic, India, South Korea and others.

The International Conference on WWER fuel is traditional, this year it is held for the 12th time and has already proved its usefulness and contribution to the enhancement of safety and reliability of the WWER reactors operated over the world.


INRNE-BAS is the largest research institute in Bulgaria in the field of nuclear physics and nuclear energy. It was founded in 1972 as a successor to the Institute of Physics with Atomic Scientific Experimental Center of BAS.

The laboratories of INRNE work in the following fields: "Theoretical and Mathematical Physics", "Physics of High Energy and Particle Astrophysics", "Nuclear Physics", "Neutron and Reactor Physics", "Nuclear Energy", "Nuclear Methods" and "Radioecology and environment".

As a result of the successful work of Bulgarian nuclear physicists, Bulgaria's membership in the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) and the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR), Dubna, became possible.

TVEL is one of the world leaders that covers needs of whole nuclear fuel cycle. JSC “TVEL” was established in 1996 in accordance with Russian Federation Presidential Decree and becomes a part of the State Corporation "Rosatom". The Fuel Company “TVEL” includes plants for nuclear fuel manifactoring, conversion and enrichment of uranium, production of gas centrifuges, as well as research and design organizations. The company is the only nuclear fuel supplier for the Russian nuclear power plants. JSC “TVEL” meets the needs of 76 power reactors in Russia and 15 other countries in Europe and Asia, 30 research and experimental reactors in the world, as well as all transport reactors of the Russian nuclear fleet. One of six power reactors in the world operates on fuel, produced by TVEL.

The International Conference on WWER fuel performance, modelling and experimental support is traditionally sponsored by the Fuel Company “TVEL”.

Kozloduy NPP is the only nuclear power plant in Bulgaria, the main producer of electricity in the country, providing more than 1/3 of the national annual electricity production. Kozloduy NPP produces the cheapest electricity in the country, which allows for a reasonable value for the final consumer.

In 1974, the first Bulgarian NPP started generating electricity. At the Kozloduy NPP site, 6 power units with a total capacity of 3760 MW were built within the framework of the Russian project. In fulfillment of the obligations of Bulgaria related to the accession to the European Union, Kozloduy NPP stopped the operation of the first four reactors type WWER-440.

IAEAis an international organization for development of cooperation in the field of peaceful use of atomic energy. It was founded in 1957 with headquarters in Vienna, Austria. The IAEA is established as an independent intergovernmental organization in the United Nations system, and after the ratification of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NNPT), its work is of particular importance as long as the NNPT obliges each participating country to conclude with the IAEA an agreement for guarantees of work in the field of peaceful use of nuclear energy.
